Smart Grid needs Intelligent Solutions

The determining factors that govern the energy-supply sector and its associated distribution requirements are all undergoing sweeping changes. The modernisation of power, gas and water-supply networks is a pending future task, and there is a demand for flexible systems designed to provide the required remote-management, safety and control technology.

Anyone concerned with the planning and design of nodal points for energy-supply networks (i.e. the management of networks, safety systems or metering) need to have access to technology that is both thoroughly tried-and-tested and suitable for meeting future requirements.

Varying load distribution and decentralisation are particularly likely to have an important influence over the service life of components in backup systems, such as those based on DC UPS devices.
The robustness of components has usually been defined, up to now at least, in terms of the ability of the items selected to withstand general environmental factors, and thus ensure a long service life.
Where performance was concerned, it was normally enough to know a system’s MTBF (Mean Time between Failure).

The questions to ask when it comes to today’s decentralised networks, which often have to handle load factors that are totally different to anything encountered so far, should in fact be: What actually happens inside the system? What effect do fluctuations in the network have on the UPS system? How many load variations is the system being subjected to? The task of monitoring has merely consisted, up to now, of determining whether the connected components are working, and that no error messages are being generated.

Zentro-Elektrik is now breaking new ground in this respect, with its innovative GWHD 500 digital DC/DC transformer.

Zentro’s team of development engineers set itself the task of creating an intelligent system capable of providing detailed status information on transformers and the items supplied by them, going way beyond the system of error messages used previously.

Zentro-Elektrik in the field of renewable energy

As in previous years, Zentro-Elektrik was represented with its exhibition stand in the Fuel Cells exhibition section. Customers were particularly interested in all aspects of their products for solar technology and battery charging and battery testing systems.

In the forum Zentro-Elektrik presented the Intelligent Harvester, a battery charger which is designed for the operation of solar panels independently of the mains. Parallel operation permits entire fields to be equipped. This device stands out thanks to its very high efficiency and flexibility in the choice of battery types (fuel cell or Li-Ion battery).

Zentro-Elektrik showed Li-Ion battery chargers in the 230 and 350 Watt power ranges e.g. for e-bikes/e-mobility applications.
Zentro offers both 0 Volt loads and digital loads (60V - 800V) for equipping test benches for testing single fuel cells.

In particular, the discussion about smart grid technologies demands frequent updating/replacement of components in a medium-voltage power grid. Zentro showed digital transducers for this purpose.

Zentro-Elektrik is announcing topically with its electronic DC load series DCL3000 a load for highest demands.
In not more than 3 U of a 19” rack, the power pack delivers 3000Watt. This was only possible to achieve by choosing the most demanding and available semiconductors and by an optimized construction combined with fast monitoring and regulation.
The controller is a fully digital PID controller with 100 kHz Sample rate with 16bit resolution of set point and 24bit resolution of actuating variable. As follow-up models to the successful GWH500 converter series, the models of the GWHD500 series have been provided with a lot of intelligence by using two 16-bit digital signal processors (DSP). The use of two communicating DSPs (one DSP each for primary and secondary circuit) does not only permit the digital control of the output voltage or the output current, respectively, but in addition digital signalling in the inverse feedback using digital magnetic couplers instead of conventional opto-couplers. In this way a maximum degree of digitalisation is achieved, i.e. less analogue switching components are required and the number of component parts is reduced.
